An excerpt from ISNetworld® RAVS®* safety plan Journey Management Program

Overview

Simply driving from point-to-point is one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities.  While it is expected that our employees will be performing significant driving of their own or company vehicles, some procedures need to be addressed when using company vehicles/ equipment – whether traveling to and from work, or on the work site.

At Replace with Company Name, there are several procedures/ directives that need to be followed to help mitigate many of the common hazards of driving.

All vehicles will be fit for their purpose and have been inspected using an appropriate checklist before the journey begins.

  • Drivers will have been properly trained and advised of the contents of the Journey Management Program (JMP) for the journey they are about to undertake, and completed JMP's will be readily accessible to drivers at the point of their departure.
  • Drivers will be rested and alert (not suffering from tiredness or fatigue) prior to the journey commencing.

The Journey Management Plan should be reviewed with road travelers before they perform any driving on company business. A copy of the plan must be readily available at the workplace. Road travelers should carry a copy of the plan.    [1]

If you do not currently have our Journey Management Program, please check with the Responsible Safety Officer (RSO), Replace with Safety Person’s Name to incorporate these when formulating your travel plans.  For instance, road journeys should only be taken when necessary. Try to complete multiple tasks in single trips to reduce the amount of driving for improved safety and efficiency. If the trip is being taken to meet with someone, determine if the meeting can be done over the phone or internet instead. Consider safer methods of travel (air, train, etc) where practicable.   [2]
