An excerpt from ISNetworld® RAVS®* Safety plan Portable Ladders Program

It is the policy of Replace with Company Name to take every reasonable precaution in the performance of work to use ladders properly at all times.

     Ladders must be in good condition, made of suitable material, of proper length, and of the correct type for the use intended.    Portable ladders shall meet the requirements of CSA Standard CAN3-Z11-M81 (R2005), Portable Ladders <3>.  Ladders shall not be altered, modified, or attached to other ladders to extend their reach.  Ladder rungs, cleats, and steps shall be parallel, level, and uniformly spaced, when the ladder is in position for use.  Damaged ladders must never be used; they should be repaired by a qualified person or destroyed.  Ladders used during the servicing of energized or potentially energized electrical equipment is made of non-conductive material (fiberglass or equivalent)  <1>.  For construction activities, ladders must be class 1 rated (heavy Duty) or higher.

     Ladders shall not be loaded beyond the maximum intended load for which they were built, nor beyond the manufacturer's rated capacity.  Ladders shall be used only for the purpose for which they were designed.   A portable ladder must not be used in a horizontal position as a platform or runway or by more than one person at a time, unless designed for such use.  A portable ladder must not be placed in front of doors that open toward the ladder, unless locked or blocked to prevent use.  Never set ladders on boxes, barrels, or other unstable bases.  Ladders must not be used as guys, braces, or skids.  The height of a stepladder should be sufficient to reach the work station without standing from either of the top two rungs, steps, or cleats of a portable ladder unless the manufacturer's specifications allow the worker to do so <2>.  Bracing on the back legs of stepladders must not be used for climbing.
