 Perhaps the biggest problem you may face in maintaining a safe workplace is the new worker.  Statistics show that ”new” workers- those employed less than a year incur almost half of all workplace accidents.  A new worker’s safety is directly related to three things: orientation, education, and experience.

 Orientation

 Before hiring a new worker, you should establish that person’s safety attitude and previous safety education/ experience.  An assessment form (located at the back of this chapter) will help organize and standardize your questions to the applicant.  This action should not be construed as to limiting employment to only persons with safety education or experience, but rather to simply assess how much initial and subsequent training will be required.

 New hires should go through a thorough safety orientation procedure which includes a checklist that the employee signs (located at the back of this chapter).  In addition, as a company policy all new hires should know the following before starting work:
